'Sisi & I' is set in late 19th Century Austria and follows Countess Irma Sztáray (Sandra Hüller) as she becomes the lady-in-waiting for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sisi (Susanne Wolff). Their bond deepens during a summer in Greece, but their return to Vienna brings dramatic changes. While 'Corsage' delivered cheeky and playful darkness with heartfelt mischief, 'Sisi & I' feels comparatively bland and conventional. The film lacks the daring charm and emotional depth that made 'Corsage' stand out, resulting in a less engaging and somewhat predictable narrative.

"Sisi & I" envelops its audience in a sumptuous visual feast. The film, set in the late 19th century, follows Countess Irma Sztáray (Sandra Hüller) as she becomes captivated by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sisi (Susanne Wolff). Their bond strengthens during a picturesque summer in Greece, yet back in Vienna, their lives face unforeseen upheaval. The movie thrives on the eye-catching beauty of Thomas W. Kiennast’s velvety, tactile 16mm cinematography and the impeccable, magazine-worthy design. Despite its narrative twists, it's the lush visuals that leave the most lasting impression.
