Introduction

The year is 2044: artificial intelligence controls all facets of a stoic society as humans routinely "erase" their feelings. Hoping to eliminate pain caused by their past-life romances, Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux) continually falls in love with different incarnations of Louis (George MacKay). Set first in Belle Époque-era Paris, Louis is a British man who woos her away from a cold husband, then in early 21st Century Los Angeles, he is a disturbed American bent on delivering violent "retribution." Will the process allow Gabrielle to fully connect with Louis in the present, or are the two doomed to repeat their previous fates? Visually audacious director Bertrand Bonello (Saint Laurent, Nocturama) fashions his most accomplished film to date: a sci-fi epic, inspired by Henry James' turn-of-the-century novella, suffused with mounting dread and a haunting sense of mystery. Punctuated by a career-defining, three-role performance by Seydoux, The Beast poignantly conveys humanity's struggle against dissociative identity and emotionless existence.

Bertrand Bonello's 'The Beast' is an audacious, sci-fi marvel that intertwines various timelines and identities. Set in 2044, the film explores a society enslaved by artificial intelligence, where emotions are routinely erased. Léa Seydoux delivers a stunning, multi-faceted performance as Gabrielle, who perpetually reconnects with different incarnations of Louis (George MacKay). From Belle Époque-era Paris to early 21st Century Los Angeles, their love faces relentless challenges. Bonello’s masterful direction creates a haunting, mysterious atmosphere that questions the human struggle with dissociative identity and an emotionless existence. Séydoux’s outburst mid-film captures the perplexing, yet gripping nature of this sci-fi epic.

In a dystopian 2044, where AI dominates human life and emotions are routinely erased, "The Beast" weaves a poignant tale of love and loss. Léa Seydoux shines in a compelling, three-role performance as Gabrielle, who endlessly searches for Louis (George MacKay) across different lives and eras. From Belle Époque Paris to early 21st Century Los Angeles, director Bertrand Bonello crafts a visually audacious and haunting sci-fi epic. Inspired by Henry James' novella, the film masterfully explores humanity's struggle with dissociative identity and an emotionless existence. Against any rhyme or reason, it works, leaving an unforgettable impact.
