Introduction

When elderly pensioner Umberto Domenico Ferrari (Carlo Battisti) returns to his boarding house from a protest calling for a hike in old-age pensions, his landlady (Lina Gennari) demands her 15,000-lire rent by the end of the month or he and his small dog will be turned out onto the street. Unable to get the money in time, Umberto fakes illness to get sent to a hospital, giving his beloved dog to the landlady's pregnant and abandoned maid (Maria-Pia Casilio) for temporary safekeeping.

Umberto D is a powerful and poignant film that masterfully captures the plight of the elderly through the unemphatic yet deeply affecting performances of Carlo Battisti and Maria-Pia Casilio. Battisti’s portrayal of the struggling Umberto and Casilio’s role as the compassionate maid bring a raw and heartfelt authenticity to the screen. The film bravely addresses the harsh realities faced by senior citizens, making it both a compelling and unsettling experience. Its unflinching depiction of societal neglect and personal desperation resonates profoundly, cementing Umberto D as an exceptionally brave and important cinematic achievement.

Not since pre-war France brought us The End of the Day has a film so poignantly addressed the struggles of old age as beautifully as Umberto D. The movie follows Umberto Domenico Ferrari, played by Carlo Battisti, who faces eviction from his boarding house due to inability to pay rent. As he fakes illness to buy time, his small dog is cared for by the landlady's pregnant maid. Director Vittorio De Sica crafts a touching portrayal of dignity and despair, capturing the somber reality of an elderly man fighting to retain his sense of self amidst life's harsh challenges.
